Thanks

Hey there,
I've rafted the Lower Yough with Wilderness Voyagers 4 times and I have never had a bad experience. Those hours on the river have given me a deep-seeded love of nature and the river and I can't wait to get back on the water.

Thank you for all your hard work and friendly faces and keep up the good work.

Rafting and Working for Wilderness Voyageurs

I have had the great opportunity to not only work for Wilderness Voyageurs in reservations this season but also go rafting as well. I can't say enough about the staff and Eric, Kasia and Lynn. I got to experience the Lower Yough and go on our staff trip to the Upper Gauley. WOW!! What an experience that was!! I am looking forward to learning how to kayak this fall and in the spring so I can run the loop on my lunch break next season. Thanks again for a wonderful experience!

hey folks,

It's the middle of october and boy is it getting chilly! The leaves are changing and the water temperature is dropping. Despite the cold weather, the white water rafting trips are still running! Here our very own Max helps a young woman, who fell out of her raft above cucumber rapid, up and out of the water. Regardless of the temperature, there is still fun to be had out on the river.

As I was hiking through the woods to take pictures of the guided trip, I stopped and admired the beauty of nature. Everything is so pristine and untouched. During the fall months, Ohiopyle is graced with the beauty of fall. I would recommend coming down and taking a long walk through the woods or pedaling down the bike trail to see autumn at its prime.
take care everyone,

Summer is winding down

Yes, Labor Day has passed and the summer is coming to an end. We had our end of season staff party on Sunday, congrats to Ben Scoville on winning employee of the year. He deserved it! The town of Ohiopyle is getting quiet during the week and all the raft guides are getting a little more free time to go play in the water. We all had one heck of a summer. Thanks to all of you beautiful people who came out for the whitewater experience, we will miss you. Come back next year and try something new. Also, drop us a line on this blog, we love hearing from you! Remember, we continue to offer river trips until it you're to cold to book them! So give us a call at 1-800-272-4141 to take a raft through a brisk whitewater wonderland. Thanks!

What kayakers do at high water.

When the rain starts pouring, kayaker smiles start widening. Why? Because that's what they live for! The water runs down the mountains and gathers in the creeks. The creeks fill up and run into the rivers. Then the rivers get muddy and...so on. When the downpours come, the local hard-boaters scamper to the creeks that are only runnable when the water is high. Meadow Run is a popular destination that empties directly into the Lower Yough, which is also popular at high water because it is packed full of tasty surf waves and holes. Speaking of holes, there are three of them that get raging when the storms come. They are located directly under the bridge in Ohiopyle next to Wilderness Voyageurs. Our boating employees love taking an hour off for some quick shredding. By the way, if you ever wish you could be a part of the ever growing legion of kayakers, we do offer instruction for any skill level. Check out more at www.wilderness-voyageurs.com/kayakinstruction.htm.
Happy Boating!

High Water Hysteria!

Something happened last week that hasn't in a long time. It rained. But this was no brief summer shower. The clouds were dark as charcoal on the horizon as the wind began to blow. The kayakers were all wondering if this was the answer to their prayers, and it was! The water came down in raging sheets as the whole town cheered to the water gods. It rained cats and dogs, hammers and nails, muskrats and otters, and any other way it could. This storm did not lack stamina, it was a multi-day affair. The creeks started raging and the kayakers came out of the woodwork. The creeks fed the Yough and it started rising. The river went from a little over a foot to almost 10 feet in only a couple days. We almost had to cancel some trips because the river level was getting too high. The water looked like chocolate milk and made for an extra-exciting ride for the lucky rafters. We had a blast!

Shout out to Cory and J-Rod,
Thanks a million for our trip on Monday. We were hesitant about rafting, but you guys helped talk us through it. Now we can not wait to bring back our friends and introduce them to the river magic.

You are so right about the Trilliums, they are booming. Check out Meadow Run Trail, it is loaded with the uncommon red/maroon Trilliums.

Trilliums are blooming!

Hey guys,

Just wanted to let everybody know that I just hiked the Great Gorge Trail (it goes around the outside of the Loop from the biketrail) and the trilliums are in bloom. I don't want to get all gushy, but man they were pretty. Come check 'em out. They won't be in for long.

Cheers,
Matt

Spring is Here!

Spring has finally come to the 'pyle! Temperatures are up, days are getting longer, and trees are starting to show signs of life. Yesterday it was nice enough that I ran the Upper Yough after work sans pogies. Levels for playboating on the Lower Yough are superb. Firefly Grille is open, and between them and Falls City Pub, Ohiopyle is officially ready for the season.

So get your butts out here! Go highwater rafting, take a bike ride or a hike before it gets too hot, or just sample Kasia's new fair-trade coffee.

If you've found your way to this page and would like to contribute, there are instructions for posting in the sidebar on the right. We welcome posts from anyone and everyone, so blog away! If you're having trouble posting, feel free to email lou@wilderness-voyageurs.com with any questions.

Peace from the river,
Lou

The Four Old Women

The four old women can't wait to come back to try and conquer the Yough and Ohiopyle, again. We would like to thank the staff for making such a memorable time for us. FYI...we have recommended you all to everyone we know, please don't hold that against us :) So, get ready staff and Ohiopyle (make sure the streets are walkable), we are coming back.
