What kayakers do at high water.

When the rain starts pouring, kayaker smiles start widening. Why? Because that's what they live for! The water runs down the mountains and gathers in the creeks. The creeks fill up and run into the rivers. Then the rivers get muddy and...so on. When the downpours come, the local hard-boaters scamper to the creeks that are only runnable when the water is high. Meadow Run is a popular destination that empties directly into the Lower Yough, which is also popular at high water because it is packed full of tasty surf waves and holes. Speaking of holes, there are three of them that get raging when the storms come. They are located directly under the bridge in Ohiopyle next to Wilderness Voyageurs. Our boating employees love taking an hour off for some quick shredding. By the way, if you ever wish you could be a part of the ever growing legion of kayakers, we do offer instruction for any skill level. Happy Boating!

High Water Hysteria!

Something happened last week that hasn't in a long time. It rained. But this was no brief summer shower. The clouds were dark as charcoal on the horizon as the wind began to blow. The kayakers were all wondering if this was the answer to their prayers, and it was! The water came down in raging sheets as the whole town cheered to the water gods. It rained cats and dogs, hammers and nails, muskrats and otters, and any other way it could. This storm did not lack stamina, it was a multi-day affair. The creeks started raging and the kayakers came out of the woodwork. The creeks fed the Yough and it started rising. The river went from a little over a foot to almost 10 feet in only a couple days. We almost had to cancel some trips because the river level was getting too high. The water looked like chocolate milk and made for an extra-exciting ride for the lucky rafters. We had a blast!
